SWIM: Hackett eyeing 800m world mark

SYDNEY, Feb 17 AAP - Grant Hackett believes he's a chance to break Ian Thorpe's 800mworld record at next month's Australian swimming championships in Sydney.

Thorpe set the record of 7:39.16 at the 2001 World Championships in Fukuoka, Japan, overtaking Hackett (7:40.34) at the last turn to claim victory.

Thorpe will skip the 800m event to concentrate on the shorter distances at the Australiantitles in Sydney but Hackett feels he is in better form than that 2001 battle and breakingthe record is a real possibility.

"I think I can swim faster than my best, which is 7:40, and the world record's 7:39,"

Hackett said. "So if I beat my best, there is a possibility I'll get it.

"There's no guarantees, but I think I'm swimming better than I was when I did that7:40, so if I go under the world record, fantastic, it's a bonus."

The Australian championships, which commence on March 22, double as the selection trialsfor the World Championships in Barcelona later this year.
