ARTS CENTER DIRECTOR PLANS TO HIRE MANAGERS.(Weekend)

Efforts to beef up its shrunken staff may come to fruition by early March, if candidates being considered for three positions are hired within the week, according to the Empire Plaza Performing Arts Center Corp.'s executive director Terry Lorden.

Lorden outlined his plans to hire three key managers for the performing arts center at the corporation's monthly board meeting Thursday. Lorden said he has lined up candidates to assume the positions for a general manager, a programming manager, and an audience development director.

Some of those candidates will be visiting the center within the next week, Lorden said.

Surf contest reminds bystanders of sea's power

The Mavericks Surf Contest was no day at the beach for participants or spectators.

Unexpected waves breaking on shore Saturday swept dozens of spectators from their perches on the man-made jetty at the southern tip of Mavericks beach.

Most escaped with minor injuries but three people were hospitalized with broken bones. Others needed plucking from the water. The near tragedy stood as a reminder of how dangerous the sea can be.

Stocks Fluctuate Ahead of Earnings

NEW YORK - Wall Street fluctuated Monday as investors, reassured by a drop in Treasury bond yields, nonetheless remained cautious about second-quarter earnings ahead of Alcoa Inc.'s report.

Investors were looking to corporate earnings to help give the market some direction in the coming weeks. Alcoa, the world's largest aluminum producer, is scheduled to report its results after the closing bell. The company, one of the Dow Jones industrial average's 30 components, is expected to report a profit of 83 cents per share.

WASHINGTON -- Federal health authorities have changed the recommended front-line defense against anthrax from Bayer's Cipro to doxycycline.

The switch to the generic antibiotic was prompted by concerns that germs would develop resistance to Cipro (ciprofloxacin) as a result of its overuse.

Public health would be better served with the tens of thousands of Americans taking Cipro preventively switching to doxycycline, according to Bradley Perkins, a leading anthrax specialist at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Widespread use of doxycycline poses less of a resistance threat, he notes.

VETERANS MEMORIAL CONTRACT AWARDED.(CAPITAL REGION)

Forging ahead with plans to build a local memorial that honors residents who are war veterans, the City Council has voted to award a $185,000 contract to J&A Bayly Construction of East Greenbush.

The company will be responsible for securing the stones needed for the memorial, as well as taking care of the landscaping and installation of the memorial.

Council members also approved Thursday night a resolution authorizing the city to take out a bond in an amount not to exceed $225,000 for other expenses related to the memorial that will be constructed in Veterans Memorial Park. Work on the much-anticipated project …
